The Kansas City Chiefs received some disappointing news regarding rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane ahead of their Week 4 showdown against the Las Vegas Raiders. Delane has been fined $12,537 for a low block considered unnecessary roughness during the Chiefs’ victory over the Miami Dolphins in Week 3.
This fine is particularly frustrating as Delane wasn’t penalized at all during the game. In his first full outing back from a shoulder injury that kept him sidelined for the first two weeks, he recorded 10 total tackles, including one for loss, and played an impressive 72 out of 73 defensive snaps. His contributions were key in the Chiefs’ 24-10 win against Miami.
Delane’s fine is part of a troubling trend this season, as penalties and fines seem to be piling up for Chiefs players. Running back Kenneth Walker III was hit with an $8,000 fine for throwing the ball into the stands after a touchdown, while offensive lineman Trey Smith faced a $6,750 penalty for a chop block. Safety Jaden Hicks also received a $6,707 fine for a hit to the head-neck area in Week 2. It feels like the NFL is getting a little carried away with these fines, especially when players are not even being penalized during games.
