Chiefs stay perfect with dominant 22-6 win over Chargers

The Kansas City Chiefs did not play a perfect football game Sunday afternoon, but their record remains perfect.

Kansas City improved to 5-0 with a convincing 22-6 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs controlled the game with an effective rushing attack, timely plays from Patrick Mahomes and their best defensive performance of the young season.

The victory leaves Kansas City as the AFC’s only undefeated team.

Kenneth Walker powers the offense

Kenneth Walker III set the tone for Kansas City, rushing for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Walker’s first score came on a 33-yard run through the middle of the Chargers’ defense, giving the Chiefs a 9-0 lead midway through the opening quarter. He struck again late in the second quarter, finishing a 65-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.

Walker’s ability to consistently produce positive yardage gave the Chiefs the offensive balance they have been searching for. It also kept Mahomes from having to carry the entire offense with Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton unavailable.

Mahomes completed 23 of 30 passes for 272 yards. He threw one interception in the red zone but was otherwise efficient, particularly on Kansas City’s final touchdown drive of the first half. Mahomes completed all five of his passes on that possession and added a 10-yard run.

The victory was the 100th of Mahomes’ career as a starting quarterback.

Xavier Worthy led the Chiefs with seven receptions for 73 yards, continuing to establish himself as Kansas City’s top receiving option while Rice recovers from his hamstring injury.

Defense delivers its best performance

The Chiefs entered Sunday with only four sacks through their first four games. They matched that total against Justin Herbert.

Kansas City held the Chargers without a touchdown, intercepted Herbert once and stopped Los Angeles on all three of its fourth-down attempts. Linebacker Jack Cochrane’s second-quarter interception helped erase a Mahomes turnover and prevented the Chargers from building any momentum.

The game’s defining defensive stand came early in the third quarter. Los Angeles drove to the Kansas City 1-yard line, but a holding penalty pushed the Chargers backward. They eventually settled for a field goal, keeping the Chiefs comfortably ahead 19-6.

George Karlaftis consistently disrupted the Chargers’ backfield, while Nick Bolton finished with 10 tackles. L’Jarius Sneed also returned to the lineup after being listed as questionable with a knee injury.

Cornerback Christian Roland-Wallace was ejected during the fourth quarter after throwing a punch at Chargers offensive tackle Alex Harkey. Any additional league discipline will be determined later.

Injury concern on the offensive line

Starting right tackle Jaylon Moore entered the concussion protocol shortly before halftime and did not return. Joshua Ezeudu replaced him at right tackle.

With Josh Simmons still working his way back from a back injury, Moore’s status becomes an important storyline heading into Week 7. The Chiefs did not immediately announce any other new injuries following the game.

ChiefsCrowd take

The final score does not fully reflect how many opportunities Kansas City left on the field. Mahomes threw an interception, Nikko Remigio lost a fumble and the offense scored only three points after halftime.

But the Chiefs also demonstrated that they no longer need Mahomes to produce weekly magic to win comfortably. Walker controlled the game, the offensive line created running lanes and Steve Spagnuolo’s defense overwhelmed an undermanned Chargers offense.

Kansas City will take its 5-0 record on the road next Sunday night, facing the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field. The availability of Moore, Simmons and Rice will be worth monitoring throughout the week.
