Chiefs’ Injury Picture Takes Shape After Overtime Win

The Kansas City Chiefs improved to 2–0 with Sunday night’s dramatic 33–30 overtime victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Now, attention turns to several injury and lineup questions ahead of Kansas City’s Week 3 trip to Miami.

Confirmed News

Starting left tackle Josh Simmons continues to work his way back from a back injury, but head coach Andy Reid stopped short of saying he will be available against the Dolphins.

In Simmons’ absence, rookie Kahlil Benson has played every offensive snap at left tackle. Reid acknowledged a few assignment-related mistakes against Indianapolis but praised Benson’s physical performance. The rookie has done enough through two games to make the eventual offensive-line decision more interesting.

Rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane dressed against the Colts but did not play. His injured shoulder had improved enough for him to be available in an emergency, but the Chiefs did not believe he was ready to handle a full game. Another week of recovery could put him in position to contribute against Miami.

There was no significant update on safety Chamarri Conner, who has yet to practice during the regular season because of a knee injury.

Kansas City also appears ready to expand rookie Emmett Johnson’s role in the backfield. Kenneth Walker III produced 178 yards from scrimmage against Indianapolis, but Reid wants Johnson to receive additional snaps to help keep Walker fresh over the course of the season.

Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton may have earned a larger role as well. Thornton caught four passes for 86 yards against the Colts, and Reid indicated that the receiver should continue receiving opportunities after his impressive start.

What It Means for Miami

The Chiefs visit the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, September 27, at 1 p.m. Eastern.

The biggest issue to monitor will be the left side of the offensive line. If Simmons remains unavailable, Benson will receive another important test while protecting Patrick Mahomes on the road.

Delane’s and Conner’s availability could also become significant against Miami’s speed. The Chiefs may need every healthy defensive back available to prevent explosive plays and force the Dolphins to sustain long drives.

Kansas City escaped Week 2 with a win and no newly announced major injury from the game. The Chiefs now have several developing lineup decisions—but also some encouraging young players making strong cases for larger roles.
