It amazes me that people are producing Cds outta their homes that sound decent. It took me about 7 years to get all of the gear I needed to do it right but I also do recordings for other bands as well. I just aquired the Presonus firestudio 10 with the HP4 headphone/monitor Hub and it does some amazing stuff.
Actually we rented out a studio office space for 200 a month. It was very small, but just enough space for the equipment and a couch. The only thing that we didnt have was a booth. but it actually came out pretty good. We recorded on pro tools.
