“Every week is going to be different. You play these different teams and they have different ways of going about their business against you, but to have that flexibility [to pass or run] is maybe the most important thing and to have players that can do those things I think is important.”

Jets:
“[LeVeon Bell] can still play at a high level and I know he’s going to want to definitely show it on Sunday.”

Chiefs’ Bell to face former team as Jets visit Arrowhead

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid doesn’t subscribe to the notion of payback in the business of professional football.
Extra motivation? That’s another story.

As the Chiefs prepare to play the New York Jets on Sunday, Reid knows one of the intriguing subplots will be running back Le’Veon Bell’s first shot at his former team. The two-time All-Pro joined the Chiefs after a rather acrimonious split with the Jets a couple weeks ago. And, after a get-your-feet wet game against the Denver Broncos last weekend, Bell could take on a much bigger role — with glee — when the Super Bowl champs face the winless Jets at Arrowhead Stadium.

“Once the whistle blows and it’s time to start, you put that in the back of the mind if that was in your plans,” Reid said this week. “You’re playing and you’re playing to the best of your ability. That’s what I think. We have done it for a couple of years and watched guys go through it, and I think that’s what happens.”

Bell has a bit of experience facing former teams. He ran 25 times for 72 yards last December in helping the Jets beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, the club with which he spent his first five seasons before another rather messy split.

There was some question whether Bell would fit into a Chiefs offense that has been humming for years, especially with so many playmakers already in the locker room. But the returns from Game 1 were promising: He ran six times for 39 yards as Clyde Edwards-Helaire, the rookie incumbent, carried eight times for 46 yards and a score.

That production against the Broncos took some of the load of Patrick Mahomes, who threw for 200 yards and another TD.

“The types of runs we have built in for them both, they can give you thunder or lightning, whatever you want on any play,” Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce said. “To have that two-headed monster back there, all those guys — we’ve got one heck of a running back room. And as a blocker, that gets you excited. You have someone who can take it to the house.”

of the second half of an NFL football game against the New England Patriots, in Foxborough, Mass. The New York Jets
have surprisingly released Bell, ending a disappointing tenure after less than two full seasons. The team issued a state-
ment from general manager Joe Douglas on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2020, in which he says the Jets made the move after having
several conversations with Bell and his agent during the last few days and exploring trade options.

OFFENSIVE OFFENSE

The Jets (7-0) lead the league in being terrible on offense, ranking last in scoring, total yards, yards passing, first downs and third-down conversions. Adam Gase tried to change things last week by handing play-calling duties to coordinator Dowell Loggains, and the Jets scored 10 points in their first three possessions. But they had just 4 yards the entire second half.

“There are some things that I’m looking to kind of adjust and see if we can get better,” Gase said. “Like, right now, it’s trying to find things that may be an issue and try to do something different. That’s really kind of the whole premise on what I was thinking leading into the last week of, ‘What can we do different to put ourselves in better position?’”

DOMINANT DEFENSE

The Jets won’t get much of a break against the Chiefs (6-1), who quietly rank fourth in the league against the pass and have intercepted at least one throw in five consecutive games. That includes Dan Sorensen’s pick-six against Denver.

“We’re probably as close of a unit as I’ve ever experienced in my seven years,” Sorensen said, “and a lot has to do with guys coming back. We have pretty much the same secondary we had last year. We know each other really well. We’ve played with each other for a lot of games and there’s a lot of continuity there.”

DOWN DARNOLD

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold struggled in his return from a two-game absence because of a sprained right shoulder, going 12 of 23 for 120 yards — the second-lowest total of his three-year career — with two interceptions. He has one touchdown and five INTs in his last three starts as rumors swirl about the Jets possibly aiming for Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence in the draft if they end up with the No. 1 pick — and if Lawrence doesn’t return to school.

“For me, I’m always optimistic about different situations,” Darnold said. “Obviously, we’re not where we want to be right now, we’re 0-7, it’s not ideal. So, for us, for me especially, it’s just about coming in here and going back to work.”

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN

The Jets had Mahomes in for an official visit before the 2017 draft and could have chosen him sixth overall, but they wound up taking safety Jamal Adams instead. The Chiefs traded up into the 10th spot and made Mahomes the second quarterback off the board after the Bears’ Mitch Trubisky.

“I definitely thought there was interest there,” Mahomes said. “Whenever you get on those visits, you know they’re pretty interested. At the time, they drafted a great player in Jamal Adams and you can’t really argue with that one.”

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS

New York’s defense has struggled this season, regularly giving up chunk plays and hurting itself with penalties, but it may have taken a step forward against Buffalo. The Bills kicked six field goals but never reached the end zone.

“I definitely hate that we let them get that many field goals,” Jets linebacker Avery Williamson said. “There were some times we could have gotten off the field, so yeah, that’s on us.”

Chiefs defense won’t rely on turnovers for success against Jets
From Arrowhead Pride

Four takeaways against the Broncos turned an easy win into a rout — but the Chiefs don’t plan to count on those.

By John Dixon
@Arrowheadphones

The Kansas City Chiefs turned in their most dominant win of the season against the Denver Broncos last Sunday — thanks in no small part to four Denver turnovers.

One was an interception that Daniel Sorensen returned 50 yards for a touchdown. Another was one of those plays that we’ll continue to see on NFL blooper reels for years to come: a flea-flicker that went horribly wrong for the Broncos.

Defensive end Frank Clark made a heads-up play to disengage from his blocker, recover the ball and somehow gain 15 yards while being tackled. Defensive tackle Chris Jones said it was his favorite turnover of the season.

“Picking it up, I thought he was about to take it back,” Jones told reporters on Thursday. “You know, it’s always fun when the defensive line can get the ball and have the opportunity to score.”

And yeah… that is fun. Including Sunday’s tally, the Chiefs have acquired 13 turnovers on the season — second-most in the NFL. But defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo denied that he and his staff are making it a special point of emphasis this season.

“Listen, there’s no key reason; we’re always pounding and emphasizing punching the ball out; you know, production’s at the ball,” said Spagnuolo on Thursday. But he was also quick to say that he doesn’t want his defenders to count on getting them.

“My message, really, is that we can’t rely on that — because if you don’t get them, you’ve got to be playing good-enough defense to keep people out of the end zone and off the scoreboard.”

Instead, Spagnuolo said he and his coaches are continuing to focus on scheme and technique — like they always do.

“It’s going to sound cliché-ish,” he warned, “but it is just being better than we were yesterday. If we just focus on that, most of that stuff will just take care of itself. I don’t get involved in ‘this part of the statistics needs to improve.’ I don’t even go there. It’s just more about the scheme and what we need to do from a technique standpoint.”

Spagnuolo’s emphasis has clearly filtered down to team leaders like Jones, who said that despite the groin injury he’s been nursing this season — which he called “a little bugger” — he’s ready to play on Sunday.

“We just focus on getting better week in and week out,” said the defensive tackle, “[to] figure out things we can get better at, figuring out how we can pressure the quarterback more. Just picking up where we left off and trying to be better.”

And that includes the weeks when the team is preparing to play a team like the New York Jets — a team that has yet to win a game this season. “If I’m correct,” recalled Jones, “two years ago, we walked in to [play] the New York Giants — I think they were 1-8 or 1-9 — and we ended up losing the game.”

876357198.jpg

He almost had it right: it was three years ago, the Giants were 1-8 and the Chiefs did lose 12-9 in overtime. (And yes… the Giants’ defensive coordinator was Steve Spagnuolo). But Jones’ point still stands: if the Chiefs take the Jets for granted, the same thing could happen.

“That’s a very good football team,” declared Jones. “Sam Darnold doesn’t get the credit, but he’s a very, very good quarterback. I think people tend to forget that because of their record, but they have guys out there — and they play really well. They’ve been in a lot of close games. You can’t take those guys for granted; that’s a hell of a football team.”

Spagnuolo shares Jones’ view.

“If you turn on the first half of last week’s game — the Jets versus Buffalo — Sam Darnold and Frank Gore and the runners, they had it cranking,” he noted. “They were ripping off some yardage, they were throwing the ball down on play-action. They didn’t finish a couple of drives and get in the end zone, but there’s still skill over there. Those guys are NFL players; they can certainly make us look bad.”

Jones even said that along with players like Aaron Donald, Grady Jarrett, Fletcher Cox and DeForest Buckner — a good list of the league’s top players at his position — he’s been paying attention to the Jets’ second-year defensive lineman Quinnen Williams.

“You watch the game when they played against the Broncos, he played lights out,” said Jones. “The guy’s a stud. And he’s getting better over time. He’s a plugger up in the middle; I feel like he’s the standpoint on their defense right now. [I’m] paying attention to him — seeing what kind of type of moves I can steal.”

But to Spagnuolo, a game like this one — unlike any other the team has played this season — is a special kind of challenge for both the coaches and players.

“We all know when we’re playing in the big games — the playoff games, etc. Everybody knows those. The emotions are there; you don’t even have to worry about that. It’s just matching the focus with the emotions. Now, it’s getting both the focus and the emotions where they need to be.”

The Jets haven’t won at Arrowhead Stadium since November of 1998 — and Chiefs would like to keep it that way.

I was just looking at that. I’m not sure you broke it. I’m seeing 2 threads with the exact same name but different comments. Both have 6 replies and the same number of views.

I tried closing and reopening the older thread, but it still won’t let me view or delete either one. I’m just a moderator though. Maybe an Administrator can fix it.

Edit: My mistake. The top one is a comment and the bottom one is the original post. I still can’t figure it out, though.
