These two met a few weeks ago in Kansas City and the Chiefs won that game,
but it wasn’t easy. The Denver defense played well. That unit has made strides.
Even so, the Chiefs offense got it cranked up last week. They will here as well.
Chiefs take it behind another big Patrick Mahomes game.
The Kansas City Chiefs will look to remain perfect in the division on Sunday afternoon as they take on the Denver Broncos for the second time in three weeks.
Here are five things to keep in mind heading into game day.
1. Here’s a look at the final injury report for both teams.
The Chiefs listed linebacker Nick Bolton (wrist) as “Out” for Sunday, but Kansas City is otherwise relatively healthy. Kicker Harrison Butker (sick) and tailback Jerick McKinnon (groin), who each missed time at practice this week, were both participants in Friday’s session.
Additionally, Head Coach Andy Reid confirmed that wide receiver Justin Watson – who dislocated his elbow against the Broncos back in Week 6 – will be available on Sunday after missing one game.
As for Denver, the Broncos’ only player with an injury designation is wide receiver Brandon Johnson, who is listed as “Questionable.” Johnson has eight catches for 122 yards and three touchdowns on the season.
The Broncos will also be without safety Kareem Jackson on Sunday as the veteran defensive back begins a two-game suspension. A significant member of the Broncos’ defense, Jackson has logged the fourth-most defensive snaps of any player on the team. He also owns the top Pro Football Focus coverage grade on the Broncos while his two interceptions lead the team.
2. The red zone will be the key on Sunday.
This point seems obvious, but when reviewing the Chiefs’ matchup against the Broncos two weeks ago, it’s worth discussing. The Chiefs racked up 389 yards of offense in that game, moving into Broncos’ territory on all but two of their 11 offensive possessions. For context, those 389 yards were the fourth-most of any team in Week 6.
Despite that production, however, the Chiefs only scored 19 points due to a 1-for-5 mark in the red zone. In fact, Kansas City marched to the Broncos’ 17-yard line, 15-yard line, 6-yard line and 3-yard line in the first half, but scored only 10 points on those four possessions. It’s all to say that the Chiefs moved the ball well against Denver, but a handful of plays in the red zone were the difference between a potential of 35 points vs. the 19 that Kansas City actually scored.
Fortunately, the Chiefs have otherwise been solid in the red zone this season. Outside of Kansas City’s 1-for-5 mark vs. Denver, the Chiefs have scored touchdowns on 15 of their 23 red zone drives. That 65 percent success rate would rank fourth in the NFL – a significant improvement from the Chiefs’ actual clip of 57.1 percent, which ranks 14th in the league.

3. The Broncos’ defense has shown significant improvement in recent weeks.
Denver’s early-season struggles on defense were well-documented, as the Broncos’ 36.2 points allowed-per-game from Week 1 through Week 5 ranked last in the NFL. That figure was buoyed by the Broncos’ Week 3 loss to Miami in which they yielded 70 points, but in the last two weeks, Denver has only surrendered a grand total of 36 points. That stretch includes a strong performance against Green Bay last week in which Denver matched a season-best with only 17 points allowed.
One key difference between the Broncos’ defense that the Chiefs saw back in Week 6 and the group they’ll play on Sunday is the addition of edge rusher Baron Browning, who made his season-debut last week. Browning – who ranked second on the Broncos in pressures in 2022 – returned to action last Sunday after a knee injury forced the third-year edge rusher to miss the first several weeks of the season. He was effective in his debut, too, racking up four pressures on just 17 pass-rushing snaps. It’s safe to assume that Browning will see an increased workload on Sunday as the Broncos continue to ease him back into action, and the Chiefs will need to be ready for it.
With that in mind, however, Kansas City has been among the best teams in the NFL at preventing pass-rushers from having an impact. The Chiefs have yielded just seven sacks this season – the fewest in the NFL – and quarterback Patrick Mahomes is currently ranked as Pro Football Focus’ top-ranked passer when pressured this year.
4. Stopping the Broncos’ offense begins with containing their running game.
Denver possesses a formidable stable of running backs that includes Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin and Samaje Perine that combined for 137 rushing yards last week against Green Bay. It was the top statistical performance of the season for Williams – who racked up 82 yards on the ground – while McLaughlin continued his impressively efficient campaign with 45 yards on just five carries.
The Broncos rushed for a season-best 145 yards as a team last week, and much of that production occurred via big plays. In fact, Denver recorded four rushes of at least 15 yards last week – the most of any team during Week 7 – as Williams (2), McLaughlin (1) and quarterback Russell Wilson (1) each contributed at least one big play on the ground.
Kansas City was excellent defensively against the Broncos in Week 6, carrying a shutout into the fourth quarter. A similar effort on Sunday will begin with limiting those big plays on the ground.
5. Rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice continues to show growth within the Chiefs’ offense.
Rice has demonstrated significant growth in recent weeks with his play on the field, tallying at least 60 receiving yards in each of his last two games. Additionally, Rice’s 72 receiving yards vs. Denver in Week 6 – which included a critical catch on third down late in the game – marked a season-best.
The advanced metrics have been impressed with Rice thus far, too. He currently ranks as the second-best rookie wide receiver in the league according to Pro Football Focus’ grading system, trailing only the Los Angeles Rams’ Puka Nacua among rookies with 20+ targets.
“He has great feel, I think that’s the biggest thing,” said Patrick Mahomes. “Obviously, you see how explosive he is, and you see the physical talent, but he has a good understanding of when he’s open and how to stay open. He’s starting to recognize coverages more and more…You can tell as he’s starting to learn more and get himself open, I think we’ll continue to work with that, and he’ll continue to find ways to get himself open whenever the necessary route is not going to.”
In terms of traditional statistics, Rice currently ranks second in receiving touchdowns (3), fifth in receiving first downs (16), seventh in catches (26), eighth in receiving yards (305) among rookies.

(AP Photo/Ed Zurga)ASSOCIATED PRESSDENVER (AP) — If the Denver Broncos finally figure out how to beat Patrick Mahomes and end their 16-game losing streak to the Kansas City Chiefs, don’t expect Sean Payton to be the life of the party.
He was suprisingly surly after the Broncos held off the Green Bay Packers 19-17 last weekend for his first home win and snapped a streak in which they’d lost an NFL record 10 consecutive games when leading at halftime.
Three of those blown leads came this season under Payton, who took exception when asked about it during an oddly combative postgame news conference.
Mistakenly thinking a reporter said “your team” when he actually said “this team,” Payton retorted, “MY team hasn’t lost 10 straight,” then admonished the reporter to rephrase his question accordingly.

“It wasn’t OUR hump — it wasn’t OUR hump,” retorted Payton. “I’m saying that respectfully — it wasn’t our hump. We’re trying to win.”
After making a halftime lead finally hold up, the Broncos (2-5) have a much bigger challenge this weekend when they host the Chiefs (6-1) just 17 days after their 19-8 loss at Kansas City.
Maybe the quick turnaround for the rematch will help the Broncos, who haven’t beaten the Chiefs since Week 2 of the 2015 season and haven’t beaten Patrick Mahomes in 11 tries.

We know what they want to do. And now, how can each team execute at a high enough level to have success?”
Payton relayed during the week that his perfectionist nature makes it hard for him to enjoy success sometimes and also leads to him snapping at reporters or chewing out his coaches like he did Sunday.
When he and his family went out to dinner to celebrate the big win, Payton said he found himself circling the restaurant parking lot asking himself, “All right, why can’t I be happy?”
“Well, you’re searching for the perfect game, and so I’m just that way,” he concluded. “I’m gonna wear my emotions on my sleeve.”

If Mahomes makes it a dirty dozen, the Broncos would tie the Rams’ futility against the 49ers from 1990-98 for the second-longest losing streak to one opponent in history and inch closer to the record 20 consecutive losses by the Bills to Miami during the 1970s.

The Chiefs’ second-leading rusher behind Isiah Pacheco happens to be Mahomes, who has 214 yards on a whopping 6.5 yards per attempt this season. There are plenty of reasons for that success, beginning with his uncanny internal clock to know when to tuck and run, and his vast knowledge of the pass routes, which help him know where to run.
“I’m always looking to throw first knowing the guys are faster than me and can make the big plays,” Mahomes said. “And then whenever I run, I run scared, and try to get the first down and get out of bounds as fast as possible.”
COVERING KELCE
Nobody has figured out a way to slow down Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who is coming off a 12-catch, 179-yard effort in last week’s win over the Chargers. The Broncos even tried to rotate cover ace Patrick Surtain II onto him two weeks ago, and Kelce still had nine catches for 124 yards.
“Maybe we see a little more of that,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “Teams are taking and putting good players on Travis, or doubling him, but he and Patrick have a unique chemistry there.”

The Broncos have held the Chiefs to 19 points and the Packers to 17 after allowing a whopping 36.2 over the first five weeks.
“They’re playing good football,” Reid said, crediting Payton with shaking up the roster and defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, formerly a Broncos head coach, for making effective adjustments. “They know how to maneuver. They’ve done a good job.”

With Broncos safety Kareem Jackson serving the first week of his two-game suspension for a vicious hit on Green Bay tight end Luke Musgrave, PJ Locke is expected to get his first start in his 51st career game. He made the game-sealing interception in the closing minutes Sunday after Jackson was disqualified for his fifth illegal hit of the season.

ParticipantChris Jones, Charles Omenihu lead an ‘interchangeable’ Chiefs pass rush
from ArrowheadPride.comWhen opponents drop back to pass, Kansas City’s defensive linemen could be coming from anywhere.
By Ron Kopp | @Ron_Kopp | Oct 27, 2023, 10:30am CDT
Denny Medley-USA TODAY SportsIn the Kansas City Chiefs’ first game with defensive lineman Charles Omenihu on the field, the team set a season-high with five sacks of Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, who entered the game as one of the NFL’s least-sacked signal callers.
Omenihu was one of five players who earned a sack, and none of them were star pass rusher Chris Jones. The unit’s depth had as strong a performance as it has had all season, which impressed Omenihu in his first full-speed action with his new team.
“It’s coming from all angles,” Omenihu told reporters in the locker room before Wednesday’s practice. “If teams want to make it to where me and Chris can’t get off, you got Mike [Danna] and George [Karlaftis] that are just as good. It’s four guys coming strong, and it’s going to continue developing and be nice.”
Omenihu lined up in multiple spots. On his sack, he burst off the edge of the formation. When he batted up an eventual interception, he was an interior rusher. This fits right in with how the rest of the defensive line is used.
“There are interchangeable pieces,” Omenihu emphasized. “Guys can rush anywhere, guys don’t have to be in one locked in spot, so you move guys around and create matchup troubles.”
Denny Medley-USA TODAY SportsChris Jones helped facilitate Omenihu’s sack by bull rushing the guard and forcing Herbert to step into a vulnerable spot. His streak of five consecutive games earning a sack came to an end, but that just speaks to how little he needed to be depended on. It speaks to a strong group around him.
“We’re building chemistry along the defensive line,” Jones noted. “Having Charles in there, having Mike Danna who can play three-technique or bump to the outside, and George is getting accustomed to getting moved around. Every guy in the room is interchangeable in the pass rush, so it’s a plus for our defensive line.”
“Charles being able to play inside and outside… he’s going to be a guy we use all over the place,” Jones envisioned. “He’s big, he’s tall, he’s faster than he looks… I was telling Joe Cullen, ‘I never think you can have enough pass rushers in one group.'”
Jones and Omenihu aligned next to each other on the sack. While Omenihu was the edge rusher that time, Jones has expressed his preference to rush over the offensive tackle rather than inside, where he can be more easily double-teamed.
That pairs well with Omenihu’s preference, which he revealed on Wednesday.
“I feel a lot more comfortable rushing inside,” Omenihu admitted. “I’m able to use my length and quickness; I have a very good sense of protections. I like it. I like it a lot.”
Denny Medley-USA TODAY SportsThe addition of Omenihu to an ascending unit, one that ranks top 10 — even top 5 — in many statistical categories, begs the question: can the Chiefs have the best defense in the NFL?
When asked, Jones answered with a very logical answer, being the true veteran leader of the unit.
“It’s more about being better than we were last week; we don’t want to put that weight on anyone’s shoulders,” Jones explained. “We still have a lot of young guys, a lot of guys accruing, so as a whole, you just want to be better than you were last week.
“At the end of the year, if we continue to do that, we have the potential to be one of the best defenses in this league.”
When the pass rush can have its best game of the season without its best player contributing to the sack total, it’s a positive indication that the Chiefs have depth, in one of the areas of the game you need it the most.
It will only be more important as the fatigue of a season creeps in, down the stretch — where the bulk of the team’s strength in the schedule lies.
