Notable Quotables:
Chiefs:

“I’ve been on a team that was 6-4 and ended up winning the Super Bowl. We have confidence every week that we’re going to find a way to win. Obviously, these last few weeks we’ve lost a couple, but we still have that mindset.”

–Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes

Bills:

“We have to have a somewhat playoff mentality going forward, and that’s not going to guarantee us to win all the games. But we can’t reach our goal if we don’t play, work, practice, come together with a sense of urgency.”

–Bills Center Mitch Morse

The Kansas City Chiefs will aim to get back in the win column this Sunday as they host the Buffalo Bills at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium

Here are five things to keep in mind heading into game day.

1. Here’s a look at the final injury report for both teams.

The Chiefs will be without tailback Isiah Pacheco (shoulder), linebacker Drue Tranquill (concussion), offensive tackle Donovan Smith (neck) and safety Bryan Cook (ankle) on Sunday due to injury.

In some good news, linebacker Nick Bolton – who hasn’t played since Week 7 due to a wrist injury – has no injury designation and appears good to go.

As for the Bills, tight end Dawson Knox (wrist) is listed as “Questionable” as the veteran tight end aims to make his first appearance since Week 7. Knox has 15 catches for 102 yards and a touchdown in seven games this year. Cornerback Kaiir Elam (ankle), who also hasn’t played since Week 7, is listed as “Questionable” for the game, too.

2. The Chiefs will aim to get back on track in terms of red zone efficiency.

Kansas City was limited to a season-low seven “true” possessions last week against Green Bay, and while the Chiefs largely moved the ball effectively throughout the game, Kansas City’s red zone touchdown efficiency – at just 50 percent – was magnified due to its limited drives.

Red zone success has often been the difference between winning and losing for the Chiefs this season, as they’ve scored touchdowns in the red zone at a 61 percent clip in their wins while doing so at only a 42 percent rate in their losses. That’s a difference of 19 percentage points, and while it might seem obvious that a lower rate of efficiency in the red zone would correlate with a team’s losses, the Chiefs’ 42 percent mark in their defeats is the seventh-lowest figure in the NFL. Essentially, that means that other teams are losing games for other reasons in spite of being successful in the red zone. Buffalo, for example, is scoring touchdowns at a 77.7 percent rate in the red zone in its six losses this year.

It’s all to say that red zone efficiency is one of the keys for Kansas City on Sunday, and for what it’s worth, Buffalo owns the league’s No. 13 red zone defense at 52.6 percent. The Chiefs have demonstrated that they can be successful in the red zone, going 3-for-4 against Las Vegas as recently as two weeks ago. That area could very well be the difference against Buffalo.

3. Historically speaking, Buffalo has sparingly blitzed Patrick Mahomes.

The Bills have 41 sacks this season – the third-most in the NFL – and they’ve recorded that lofty number without blitzing much, doing so at the 10th-lowest rate in the league (23.2%). They’ve historically blitzed Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes at an even lower rate in their five matchups against him, too, tallying just 29 blitzes on a whopping 236 dropbacks.

Here’s a look at Buffalo’s blitz rate in each of its five matchups against Mahomes, with the 2020 AFC Championship Game existing as the lone outlier:

2020 (Week 6): 2 blitzes on 34 dropbacks (6%)

2020 (AFC Championship Game): 12 blitzes on 39 dropbacks (31%)

2021 (Week 5): 0 blitzes on 63 dropbacks (0%)

2021 (Divisional Round): 6 blitzes on 53 dropbacks (11%)

2022 (Week 6): 9 blitzes on 47 dropbacks (19%)

It remains to be seen what kind of defensive strategy Buffalo will deploy on Sunday, but if history is any indication, it’s likely that the Bills will primarily rely on their four-man rush to generate pressure. If that’s the case, it’s imperative that Kansas City’s offensive line – which has allowed the second-fewest sacks in the NFL (17) – renders it ineffective.

4. Turnovers (or the lack thereof) have often been the difference for Buffalo this season.

The Bills are a rather confounding study in that they own a +100 point differential but have only a 6-6 record to show for it. Buffalo is 2-6 in one-score games this year, and in four of those six losses, the Bills either led or tied the score with less than three minutes remaining. It all indicates that Buffalo is a significantly better team than its record may suggest, and turnovers have often been the primarily culprit in those tight defeats.

In fact, Buffalo is 5-1 this season when it turns the ball over fewer than two times. In games where the Bills record multiple giveaways, however, they’re 1-5. Specifically, fifteen of the Bills’ 20 giveaways this year have taken place in their own territory, with a league-most six giveaways occurring on the first play of a drive.

Additionally, it’s worth pointing out that Buffalo has zero red zone turnovers this season. That’s in stark contrast to last year, when the Bills led the league in that category. In other words, Buffalo isn’t turning the ball over much at all when on the move, but far too often, the Bills’ drives have ended before they really got started.

That has been a significant development, because when the Bills protect the ball, they generally find success. Buffalo owns the league’s best third-down offense (49.7%) and its second-best red zone offense (67.4%), averaging the fifth-most points-per-game (27.3) of any team.

With all of that in mind, the turnover battle will be of particular importance on Sunday.

5. The Bills have been running the football with success this year.

Buffalo annually features one of the league’s top offenses, but this specific group is especially dynamic because of its ability to effectively run the football from the running back position.

Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen has always been a dangerous runner, rushing for more than 2,000 yards over the last three seasons, but while he’s on pace for a career-low in rushes this year, the duo of tailbacks James Cook and Latavius Murray has been quite effective.

Cook, in particular, ranks 10th in the NFL with 731 rushing yards this year, and as a team, the Bills are tallying at least four yards on a league-most 48.5 percent of rushing attempts. In fact, when Cook rushes for 60+ yards this season, Buffalo is 5-1. When he doesn’t hit that mark, the Bills are 1-5.

Bills and Chiefs to meet at Arrowhead with both teams feeling desperate for a win

By DAVE SKRETTA
Thu, December 7, 2023 at 3:59 PM CST

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Bills and Chiefs are accustomed to playing each other with the NFL spotlight shining squarely upon them.

There was that AFC championship game a few of years ago, when Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen and Kansas City counterpart Patrick Mahomes went toe-to-toe for four quarters. And the divisional playoff game the following season, when Mahomes needed a mere 13 seconds to march his team into range for a tying field goal, then led the Chiefs to victory in overtime.

Even their games the past two Octobers have been must-see TV featuring two of the league’s best teams.

Yet there is a different feel surrounding the Bills’ return to Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.

Buffalo is muddling along at 6-6 and outside the current playoff picture, the first time since Allen’s rookie season in 2018 that the Bills were .500 or worse at this point in the season. And the Chiefs have lost three of their last five games, falling to 8-4 and suddenly looking up at Baltimore and Miami in the AFC standings.

“We understand what’s in front of us and what situation we’re in,” Allen said , “but we’ve got a lot of guys in this locker room that are very excited to be back, and we have a very good feeling in this locker room right now for what we need to do.”

The Bills are in their current predicament largely because of their inability to win close games. Each of their losses have been by six points or fewer, including four losses in the six games they played before getting last week off.

With Dallas and Miami still on the schedule, their path back to the playoffs won’t be an easy one.

“We have to have a somewhat playoff mentality going forward,” Bills center Mitch Morse said, “and that’s not going to guarantee us to win all the games. But we can’t reach our goal if we don’t play, work, practice, come together with a sense of urgency.”

The Chiefs have a similar sense of urgency coming off their loss last Sunday in Green Bay. They squandered control of their own destiny when it came to the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, and the AFC’s lone first-round bye, with the lackluster 27-19 defeat.

“I’ve been on a team that was 6-4 and ended up winning the Super Bowl,” Mahomes said. “We have confidence every week that we’re going to find a way to win. Obviously, these last few weeks we’ve lost a couple, but we still have that mindset.”

Unlike the Bills, though, the Chiefs do not face anyone with a winning record the rest of the regular season.

“We can’t lose three out of four, or three out of five. It’s a critical situation,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said, “especially where we’re trying to be in the next few weeks. We have to correct the errors, and we have to correct them fast.”

MILLER’S SITUATION

Bills pass rusher Von Miller is expected to play Sunday despite allegations of domestic violence made against him during their week off.

Miller turned himself in to police in a Dallas suburb after being charged in a warrant with domestic violence against the mother of his children, who is pregnant. He faces a charge of third-degree felony assault of a pregnant woman.

“No one wants their name associated with any accusation like that,” Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane said. “But things happen sometimes, and again, we have to remember people, we have to give them their fair due process.”

INJURY ITEMS

The Chiefs are unlikely to have linebacker Drue Tranquill (concussion), left tackle Donovan Smith (neck) and safety Bryan Cook (ankle), while running back Isiah Pacheco is nursing a bruised shoulder. But they are hopeful that linebacker Nick Bolton will be back soon from injured reserve, where he landed after wrist surgery, providing a big boost to a banged-up defense.

INJURY ITEMS, PART 2

The Bills aren’t going to give the Chiefs any sympathy when it comes to injuries. Tight end Dalton Knox has missed five games after his own wrist surgery and cornerback Kaiir Elam four to an ankle injury, but both resumed practicing this week, raising hopes they will soon come off IR. Meanwhile, cornerback Dane Jackson cleared the concussion protocol and safety Taylor Rapp was back at practice after missing a game with a neck injury.

QUARTERBACK CONCERNS

Allen and Mahomes have been so good for so long that it becomes a big storyline whenever things go awry. In both of their cases, turnovers have been a problem this season.

Allen has committed at least one in eight straight games — nine interceptions, two lost fumbles — while Mahomes has thrown 10 picks and is on pace to set a career high.

COACHING CONCERNS

The Bills have scored 66 points in their two games since offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey was fired and quarterbacks coach Joe Brady took over; they had scored 123 in Dorsey’s final six games total. But that doesn’t mean the Chiefs are writing off everything that Buffalo did over its first 10 games this season.

“There’s some differences,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, “but there’s also some of the same things. They didn’t completely can the offense there. I think we’ll have a good feel for what they do.”

5 things to watch as the Chiefs play the Bills in pivotal AFC game
from ArrowheadPride.com

Both teams are looking to bounce back from losses, with the AFC playoff picture in mind.

By Ron Kopp | @Ron_Kopp | Dec 9, 2023, 1:00pm CST

For the fourth-consecutive regular season, the (8-4) Kansas City Chiefs and the (6-6) Buffalo Bills will face off. Just like the last three, the game will be played at Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:25 PM Arrowhead time on Sunday, one of the premier NFL matchups in Week 14.

The Chiefs stand as one-point favorites heading into the weekend, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. That line has come down since it was first revealed, leaning towards a Bills team that is as desperate as a contender can be. Any further losses could be the nail in the coffin of Buffalo’s postseason hopes.

Fresh off a bye week, too, the Bills are ripe to come into Kansas City and pull off the upset, one that would push the Chiefs further out from the one-seed race. I have five things to watch in a pivotal AFC battle:

1. Patrick Mahomes carrying the offense

The Chiefs’ offense will take the field against Buffalo without starting running back Isiah Pacheco for the first time this season. In fact, it will be the first game he has missed in his career, and it’s coming at a bad time.

As quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the pass game have struggled to find rhythm in recent games, the Chiefs have leaned on Pacheco. The starting running back touched the ball at least 20 times in each of the last four games, including the 123 yards he totaled against the Green Bay Packers on 21 combined carries and receptions.

The Chiefs will have to rely on Mahomes to drop back and throw constantly. He will have to maneuver around pressure: Buffalo has the fifth-highest pressure rate as a team this season and is tied for the NFL lead in sack rate (9.5%). Rookie left tackle Wanya Morris has his work cut out for him in his first career start.

Regardless of pass protection, this phase of the game will come down to whether or not the Chiefs’ wide receivers step up to connect with Mahomes consistently.

2. Containing Josh Allen

The Bills’ 6-6 record distracts from Buffalo’s offense being one of the league’s best this year. The Bills rank second in total yards per offensive play, second in red-zone conversion rate, and lead the NFL in third-down conversion rate (49.7%).

It starts with quarterback Josh Allen, who has the fourth-most dropbacks in the NFL this year. He is completing 68% of his passes and ranks second in touchdown passes (24), but the Chiefs know Allen’s running ability is a crucial component of this matchup.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo acknowledged the challenge on Thursday.

“He’s hard to bring down, he’s such a big dude,” Spagnuolo described for reporters. “I can’t find too many clips on there where he slides. He turns into a fullback really. I think he’s an elite competitor.”

This season, Allen ranks third among quarterbacks in rushing yards on scrambles — but balances that with throwing on the run.

“He’s always looking downfield,” Spags continued. “I know I put a PowerPoint up yesterday: scrambling then throwing it, how many passing yards… it was like 483 or something. I think it’s the best in the league… and he can tuck and run it too.”

The Bills have limited Allen’s usage as a designed runner so far this year, but it will assuredly be a part of the game plan this weekend in Kansas City.

The absence of Pacheco is a blow, considering Buffalo allows 4.7 yards per rush this season — the fourth-highest rate in the NFL. The Chiefs’ offense will still want to establish a presence on the ground.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire will be the primary ball carrier; he hasn’t seen more than three carries in a game since Week 3. I believe the team will opt to elevate rookie Deneric Prince from the practice squad again and mix him in too.

Veteran Jerick McKinnon should be reserved for pass downs; he has not looked as explosive on run plays as he has in past years.

Watch for wide receiver Kadarius Toney to be used from the backfield, getting handoffs from shotgun like he did against the Philadelphia Eagles.

4. Matching up with Bills’ pass catchers

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs is the alpha male in the Buffalo receiving corps. He will draw the attention of cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, but there are other intriguing matchups to consider.

Typically aligned on the outside, wide receiver Gabe Davis is a big-bodied, downfield threat (as Chiefs fans remember). The defense will want to match him up with either cornerback Jaylen Watson or Joshua Williams, avoiding the size mismatch between Davis and Trent McDuffie.

McDuffie will have a challenge of his own in the slot: Khalil Shakir, a second-year wideout who can make big plays after the catch.

After starting the year with more two-tight end sets, Buffalo has shifted to 11 personnel with Dawson Knox hurt. Rookie Dalton Kincaid has caught at least five passes in each of the last six games. Safety Justin Reid will be tested at all levels of the field, covering Kincaid’s athleticism.

5. The return of Nick Bolton

With running back Jerick McKinnon designated as questionable for the game, starting running back Isiah Pacheco is trending for more and more touches. It’s deserving — and many times, it’s what the offense has needed to get going.

There is, however, a lot of season left for a position group that seems as thin as it ever has during the last few years. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire has been running hard — but not effectively enough to spell Pacheco. That’s why I believe running back La’Mical Perine needs more snaps — sooner rather than later.

That could happen against the Packers, who have faced the third-most rushing attempts per game — and have allowed the eighth-highest yards per rush (4.4).

I wouldn’t say this is a “Must win” game, but it’s at least a “really would be a big help if we win” game.

Go Chiefs!
