As has been mentioned, in a somewhat meandering way, the only way the Colts could have got any picks for Manning was to have another team assume his contract or to have picked up the $28 million bonus to keep him under contract so they could negotiate with another team for picks. What would have been the point? That $28 million would pay for 3 or 4 top free agents or to buy the first round draft picks outright. Severing the contract was the only way to free up the $50 million total bonus/salary they would have been responsible for.
The punishment fits and the Commish has said there will be more punishments to come. Warren Sapp has said previously that in TB had an “inside pool” among the defensive players. It barely caused a whisper around the league when he talked about it after he retired. And when I heard him laughing and joking about it on NFL TV it pissed me off because he ended the greatest receivers career-yeah Jerry Rice went on to play for Oakland, but his career was essentially ended when Sapp destroyed his knee. Maybe that’s why Goodell has been so harsh is to stop the practice altogether.
I kinda think you are confusing two different things. I was not, per the OP, speaking of the Chiefs, but rather speaking of player “bandwagoners”. Which, by the way, is demonstrated here. First it was “Cassel can’t do anything. He sucks. Anyone else could do better.” Now it’s “Cassel was a good pick up.”
The two main trawlers have been blocked, so I can’t see what they’re saying unless someone quotes them. With that said, I am rather irritated at the comments that say “rose colored glasses”. Uh yeah, that’s why we’re fans in the first place-to root for the team we WANT to see succeed, not dwell on failure. If the whole reason we are here is to honestly evaluate just another team in the NFL, we could go to Yahoo or NFL general forums. We are here because we WANT our team to succeed and look at the positives. That’s the point of being a fan of a given team. So yeah, it is infuriating that we have trolls here trying to rain on our parade.
