          Notable Quotables:
          Chiefs:

“I think the first thing you realize is that at any moment, one play can change the entire game. It’s like that in the regular season, but the playoffs, it even goes to another level. One play can end your season or keep it going.”

          –Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes

          Steelers:

“We probably aren’t supposed to be here. We probably are not a very good football team. Out of 14 teams that are in, we’re probably at number 14. We’re double-digit underdogs in the playoffs.”

          –Steelers Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger

It was in Week 16 when the Steelers were blown out,
36-10, by the Chiefs. They barely competed in that
game, but they are back as the last wild-card team in
the AFC. Don’t expect another blowout like that one.
The Steelers are healthier now and have a coach in
Mike Tomlin who knows how to win in the playoffs. The
Chiefs have had defensive issues the past two weeks,
which could be a problem. The Steelers can’t stop the
run, but the Chiefs don’t run it that much, and if they
do that takes away the strength of their team. That’s
why I think this one will be close. The Steelers will
hang around, but the Chiefs will win it.

Steelers visit Chiefs with nothing-to-lose playoff attitude

By DAVE SKRETTA January 14, 2022

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Mike Tomlin and Ben Roethlisberger are brutally honest about the Steelers’ chances of advancing past the wild-card round of the playoffs, especially given the Chiefs humiliated them just a few weeks ago in Arrowhead Stadium.

First, the Pittsburgh coach: “I don’t know how much you learn from it, to be quite honest with you. They smashed us so definitely,” Tomlin said of the first meeting. “More than anything, this is like a reboot.”

Then, the quarterback: “We probably aren’t supposed to be here,” Roethlisberger said. “We probably are not a very good football team. Out of 14 teams that are in, we’re probably at number 14. We’re double-digit underdogs in the playoffs.”

You almost wonder whether the Steelers will even show up Sunday night.

But they need only look at their own postseason history to know there’s always a chance. The likely retiring Roethlisberger was a second-year pro in 2005 when the Steelers parlayed another wild-card berth into their most-recent Super Bowl triumph.

Few folks back then expected a team featuring the retiring Jerome Bettis to make such an inspired playoff run.

“We’re probably 20-point underdogs,” Roethlisberger said, “and we’re going against the No. 1 team that’s won the AFC the last two years — arguably the best team in football we don’t have a chance. So let’s just go in and play and have fun.”

Indeed, the Steelers (9-7-1) are playing with nothing to lose while the Chiefs (12-5) carry the weight of hefty expectations.

Not only have they won the past two AFC titles, they’ve been to the past three championship games, and they’re fresh off a record sixth West division title. The organization that once went nearly three decades without winning a home playoff game has now won five in a row, thanks to a bevy of talent surrounding Pro Bowl quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“I think the first thing you realize is that at any moment, one play can change the entire game,” Mahomes said. “It’s like that in the regular season, but the playoffs, it even goes to another level. One play can end your season or keep it going.”

The Chiefs were downright dominant during the middle part of the season, when a defense that was among the worst in the league did an about-face. But they stumbled down the stretch, losing in Cincinnati in their penultimate game — costing them a chance of having the No. 1 seed, a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

They still get to start at Arrowhead Stadium. But rather than spend this weekend resting up for the divisional round, they get to face the nothing-to-lose Steelers on Sunday night.

“Right now it’s all Pittsburgh,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “It takes every bit of effort right now to be ready for this team.”

                          WATT’S UP, DOC

Steelers pass rusher T.J. Watt was a beaten-up non-factor against the Chiefs last month, playing about half of the defensive snaps and making one tackle. But he’s much healthier now, and despite missing two games entirely and parts of two others because of injuries, he tied Hall of Famer Michael Strahan’s sack record with 22 1/2 this season.

“I don’t know what runs in that family, but they have great football players over there,” Mahomes said. “He’s special the way he can bend and get to the quarterback, but also the effort he plays with. They have a lot of guys that go and go.”

                          STUCK IN THE BLOCKS

The Steelers have lost their past three playoff games, and two came at home when they walked onto the field as favorites and fell behind by 20-plus points. Slow starts have remained a bugaboo this season; the Steelers trailed Kansas City 23-0 at halftime and by 30 in the second half of their meeting earlier this season.

                          GET YOUR KICKS

Chris Boswell is one of three current Steelers that played in an 18-16 win over Kansas City in the divisional round in 2017, and perhaps the most important. He went 6 for 6 on field goals, helping them advance without reaching the end zone.

                          CATCHING KELCE

The Chiefs’ 36-10 romp past Pittsburgh the day after Christmas came without Travis Kelce, who was in the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols. He’ll be back on the field Sunday against a team that has trouble dealing with talented tight ends.

“You allow him to have a (short) catch, but you pretty much better tackle,” Steelers linebacker Robert Spillane said. “He’s known to take 5-yard catches and turn them into 55-yard touchdowns. Tackle the catch is the main emphasis for us. ”

                          OVER THE HILL

Tyreek Hill dealt with COVID-19 around the same time as Kelce, though he was cleared to play against Pittsburgh. While he was noticeably slowed, Hill still had two catches in the game. That helped him to break Kelce’s single-season franchise mark with 111 catches, albeit during an expanded 17-game regular season.

“That record,” Kelce said with a grin this week, “is supposed to be held by a wide receiver.”

5 things to watch in the Chiefs’ postseason

Kansas City’s hoping for another championship run. Can the team reach a third-consecutive Super Bowl?

I remember when postseason football felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience as a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, it’s commonplace; the team has made the playoffs for the seventh-consecutive season — and they’re looking to advance to their third-straight Super Bowl.

They’ll have to play on Wild Card weekend for the first time in quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ starting career — meaning it will take four victories to earn a championship, rather than three.

It’s a challenge, especially for a team that has played more football than anyone else over the last two or three seasons. Yet, no team is better equipped to overcome it — whether it’s because of Mahomes, head coach Andy Reid or the other stars on the Chiefs’ roster.

The team is taking it one game at a time — but I’m looking at the playoffs as a whole. I have five things to watch for in the Chiefs’ latest run at a title:

                              1. Which secondary pass catcher steps up?

                              1363941613.jpg

On offense, the most significant difference between this postseason and previous ones is the absence of a truly-talented playmaker as the third pass catcher behind tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

The Chiefs entered previous playoffs with wide receiver Sammy Watkins — who led the team in receptions and receiving yards in both the 2018 playoffs and the 2019 run. He was hurt last year — and while the Chiefs overcame it to get to the Super Bowl, his limitations contributed to the egg-laying performance on offense.

Without Watkins, defenses are more willing to ultimately sell out on stopping Hill and Kelce. It has been done many times this season, with mixed offensive results:

Week 2 at Baltimore Ravens: With Hill being limited to 14 yards, wide receivers Byron Pringle, Mecole Hardman and Demarcus Robinson combined for 164 yards and two scores on 10 catches. The Chiefs scored 35 points.

Week 13 vs. Denver Broncos: Hill and Kelce were held to 49 yards total. Pringle, Hardman and Robinson combined for 47 yards on four catches — including two drops. The offense only mustered 16 points.

Hardman’s career game in Week 18 gives him momentum into the postseason; watch to see how the Chiefs’ deploy his talents. Outside of him, it may be the running back-conglomerate that turns into the third-most reliable receiver — but don’t be surprised if the main culprit of an upset this postseason comes from not having a better talent as the third pass-catching option.

                              2. How dominant can the pass rush be?

                              1364498062.jpg

This might be the most impactful a Chiefs’ pass-rush unit will be in any postseason with Mahomes.

It may not be the best, considering the 2018 team had pass rushers Chris Jones, Dee Ford and Justin Houston combine for 37.5 sacks during the regular season — but with this year’s team having a much more formidable back end of the unit, the pass rush has a chance to make more of a difference.

In 2019, Jones played hurt for the first two games. Last season, Jones and defensive end Frank Clark were together, but the third option was Tanoh Kpassagnon. Now, it’s Melvin Ingram — who has come on strong since being traded to the Chiefs prior to Week 9.

There are some shaky offensive lines on potential AFC opponents, including this week’s: the Pittsburgh Steelers. With the Chiefs’ pass-rush depth looking better, they can take over these games depending on the opponent.

                                3. Getting more explosive plays from the run game

                                usa_today_17345534.jpg
                                Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

It’s no secret that the Chiefs’ offensive line has become one of the most physically imposing in the NFL. Yet, it doesn’t appear that Kansas City always factors that into their play calling.

Instead of horizontally-designed zone runs, the Chiefs should be using gap runs with pulling linemen more often; these designs are more likely to give the ball carrier an open lane to fly through. The issue? Not every Chiefs’ running back takes advantage of the open lanes — but that’s where the game plan is important.

With four running backs all ready to make a play, the staff needs to use each players’ best skill set with the appropriate play call. To get more explosive gains from the downhill-run game, Darrel Williams might be the best option. He will get his opportunity to shine in the Chiefs’ first game, with Clyde Edwards-Helaire, likely the shiftier of the two, having been ruled out.

                                4. What position the Chiefs put their cornerbacks in

                                usa_today_17444042.jpg
Kareem Elgazzar/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has always been aggressive with blitzing — but a lot of the time, blitzes will leave coverage players on an island. Depending on the matchup, it can be a disaster — just like it was in Cincinnati in Week 17.

The Bengals are just one of multiple AFC contenders with a talented receiving corps — like A.J. Brown and Julio Jones with the Tennessee Titans, or Stefon Diggs and Cole Beasley with the Buffalo Bills. It won’t be an easy task for any Chiefs cornerback to cover those players individually, so there needs to be a plan to limit those situations as much as possible.

It’s not about trusting or distrusting the cornerbacks to get the job done, it’s just how volatile those situations can be; the offense has all the advantages, including the possibility of a touchy flag being thrown.

If the pass rush can prove to wreak havoc itself against a team with elite receivers, I’d like to see Spags lay off the blitzing a little more than usual.

                                5. Which young players elevate their game

                                usa_today_17259428.jpg
                                Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

In the postseason, lesser-known players can etch their name in the minds of fans for life — no matter if it’s the beginning or end of their career with the team.

The Chiefs have many players that could fit that qualification — but I believe one defender will elevate his reputation from an exciting, young player to one of the premier playmakers at his position: linebacker Willie Gay Jr.

You can tell Gay is young and still a little raw at times. Still, his instincts and feel for the game have translated to big plays this season — especially in the passing game: Only four NFL linebackers have more interceptions than the two he nabbed this season, and he had two other pass breakups that nearly turned into turnovers.

His athleticism will provide a skill that Chiefs linebackers simply haven’t had over the last three playoff runs; I believe that will translate to him manufacturing difference-making plays.

Chiefs vs. Steelers: Game and score predictions
                                  From ArrowheadPride.com

Let’s see what Arrowhead Pride contributors — and our readers — think about Sunday’s playoff game against Pittsburgh.

                                  1237456959.0.jpg

For the Kansas City Chiefs’ final regular-season game against the Denver Broncos, Arrowhead Pride contributors were unanimous in their belief that the Chiefs would win — but there was some disagreement about by how much. All but two predicted a blowout — and no one called for an easy win between eight and 13 points. It was the first time that’s happened this season. So our composite prediction of a 30-13 Kansas City win was 36 points removed from the 28-24 final against Denver. Our readers were less confident of a big win: about two in five thought it would be an easy win — and about one in 10 thought the game would be close.

On Wild Card Weekend, the Chiefs face the Pittsburgh Steelers at Arrowhead Stadium. According to DraftKings Sportsbook, Kansas City is favored by 12.5 points. Let’s see what the staff — and our readers — think about the matchup.

                                  Tom Childs (@tomchilds56)

The NFL is getting exactly what it deserves for adding two extra teams into the playoffs: a far superior second seed facing off against a ridiculously outmatched seventh seed. Even if the Chiefs do end up blowing Pittsburgh away, no one will feel like they’ve learned anything about Kansas City. Bring on the real playoffs next week! Chiefs 42, Steelers 17

                                  John Dixon (@Arrowheadphones)

After the team’s 36-10 rout of the Steelers in Week 16, it’s pretty tempting to think this will be another Kansas City blowout. But in the previous game, both teams were without key players — and in such a situation, I would be very surprised to see Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin come to the table without a better plan. Besides… this is the postseason. If Ben Roethlisberger goes down, he’ll go down swinging. I think the Chiefs will jump out to an early lead — but as the saying goes, the score will be closer than the game would indicate. Chiefs 28, Steelers 21

The biggest difference between the Week 16 matchup and this Wild Card game is the health of Pittsburgh linebacker T.J. Watt, who was hindered by injured ribs in the last game. Watt — along with Alex Highsmith — will provide a challenge for the Kansas City offensive line, which has become one of the league’s more reliable units in protecting their quarterback. The Chiefs appear to be nearly at full health; running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire looks to be the biggest player who won’t go. The defense has to be prepared for Najee Harris, who broke some big runs the last time, but is questionable for the game. We must expect an all-out effort from Ben Roethlisberger, who could be playing in his last NFL game. But in that duel, I am still taking Patrick Mahomes any day of the week — and twice on Sunday. Despite having started in two Super Bowls, this will be Patrick Mahomes’ first start during Wild Card Weekend — playing against a Steelers team he beat just three weeks ago. If the Chiefs can minimize the impact a healthy T.J. Watt can have on the game, the offense should flourish again. On the other side of the ball, a repeat performance from the Chiefs’ defense should be expected. Ben Roethlisberger is now a bad quarterback, ranking near the bottom in every passing efficiency category — while still ranking in the top five in attempts per game. He ranks 30th in air yards per completion and is last in the league in time in the pocket before getting pressured. In over 600 dropbacks, he has scrambled just three times. All this means that Roethlisberger wants to get the ball out quickly to prevent being hit — and that shortens the space that defenses need to cover. This plays into Steve Spagnuolo’s hands; according to DVOA, his defense is the league’s best in the short passing game. Overall, this is a great matchup for the Chiefs — but I expect Andy Reid to call a vanilla gameplan to keep the “January plays” for next week. Bold Prediction: Mecole Hardman has a major impact play, building on his first 100-yard receiving game from last week. Chiefs 27, Steelers 20

These two teams less than a month ago, when the Chiefs won 36-10. What makes that win more impressive is that Travis Kelce didn’t play — and Tyreek Hill played less than half the snaps. This is most likely Ben Roethlisberger’s last game, so I would expect the Steelers to play inspired football. And since nobody expects the Steelers to win, expect for them to play loose — and pull out all of the tricks. But Roethlisberger’s arm is shot, so I expect the Chiefs to stack the box, forcing him to take shots on the outside. At this point in his career, he just isn’t capable of consistently doing that. On the other side, the Chiefs should be able to run the ball — which will open things up for Patrick Mahomes in the passing game. Chiefs 34, Steelers 13

As a Chiefs fan, it’s okay to be overconfident heading into Wild Card weekend; the Steelers are not the kind of team that usually qualifies for the playoffs. In fact, I’d argue they weren’t even one of the 10 best AFC teams this season; their minus-55 point differential (the fifth-lowest in the conference) proves that. It’s the Chiefs who can’t be overconfident — and I’m not worried they will be. I believe Kansas City will take care of business, controlling this game with a strong rushing attack and building momentum into the Divisional round. Chris Jones highlights the defense by obliterating the Steelers’ offensive line. Chiefs 30, Steelers 17

I don’t expect this game to be the same 60-minute body slam that the Chiefs put on the Steelers in Week 16. This is Ben Roethlisberger’s last hurrah before he rides off into the sunset — and at this point, Pittsburgh is playing with house money. Expect Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin to pull out all of the stops — first-half onside kicks, trick plays, etc. — to try and keep his underdogs in the game. The Steelers want to run the ball, so Kansas City needs to be ready to play sound gap-assignment football. T.J. Watt is healthy this time around, so I think that in an attempt to exploit Kansas City’s loss of right tackle Lucas Niang, Tomlin is going to dial up the pressure on the right side of the ball. Meanwhile, I think the Chiefs go after the Steelers’ 31st-ranked run defense; Pittsburgh has allowed 200+ yards rushing on four different occasions this year. I foresee the Chiefs jumping out to an early lead — and then pounding the rock the rest of the way home. Chiefs 31, Steelers 20

I am not going to be the person who thinks the Chiefs are going to walk all over the Steelers; I believe this game will be close. Kansas City will start out by scoring on their first drive — and in the majority of their first-half possessions — but as it has the past two weeks, the offense will then slow down. The Steelers will be the exact opposite. They’ll start off slow and finish strong — and that’s where the writing is all over the wall. I feel like T.J. Watt will make his presence known throughout the game — but also that Patrick Mahomes will bail out his team. Chiefs 27, Steelers 24

This week, only the Chiefs can beat the Chiefs. As fans, we have experienced Pittsburgh’s perspective many times: entering a playoff game with the inferior quarterback, hoping that running the ball and playing good defense will bring a win. Unfortunately for the Steelers, the outcome is likely to be similar to the ones suffered by many Kansas City teams that entered the playoffs with the same plan. The Chiefs’ offense will again be efficient — if not exciting. The Steelers’ offense will perform better with rookie tight end Pat Freiermuth, who will be available after missing the first game with a concussion. But Ben Roethlisberger’s limited arm (and middling offensive line play) will again seal Pittsburgh’s fate. After a choppy two weeks, the Chiefs defense will return to form for at least one week, delivering a performance that temporarily creates chatter linking defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to the New York Giants’ head coaching vacancy. On paper, there just aren’t very many ways the Steelers should come out ahead. But in the NFL, you should never take games for granted — see the Indianapolis Colts in Week 18. The Steelers’ pass rush should be more of a problem — and down the stretch, Najee Harris has really come on for them. The Chiefs’ run defense continues to struggle; we should expect the Steelers to attack that part of it. At the end of the day, though, Ben Roethlisberger’s limitations as a passer just crush any chance for his offense to be explosive — and that works in the Chiefs’ favor. With tight end Travis Kelce active in this game, I’d expect Kansas City to attack the Steelers in a similar fashion to what we saw in Week 16. Chiefs 27, Steelers 13

The Steelers — like Ben Roethlisberger — have had a good run. They have plenty of talent — and in the last couple of weeks, have done enough to get into the playoffs. But that run should come to an end in Kansas City. The Chiefs have been tested all year — and in the postseason, too. They’ve had big comebacks — along with games where they went out to a big early lead. Patrick Mahomes has now seen it all, including defenses that limit his ability to throw deep or bring tons of pressure. The coaches know that if they do what they do, the opponent won’t matter so much. If the offense is efficient, protects Mahomes and takes care of the football (limiting both the drops and the turnovers) — and if the defense tackles well and pressures the quarterback — this team will win against any opponent. The Steelers are just the unfortunate franchise that has to face the Chiefs twice within a few weeks. This one will be closer than the last one — because it’s the playoffs, and the Steelers have nothing to lose — but expect a big game from Mahomes and the Chiefs running backs, along with a couple of game-changing plays from Chris Jones, Melvin Ingram and/or Frank Clark. This team was built for a postseason run — and that starts on Sunday night. It’s the postseason in Kansas City. Enjoy the ride, folks! Chiefs 35, Steelers 24

I respect the Steelers’ organization; if you make the playoffs, you belong — period. If it wasn’t the case, another team would have that No. 7 seed. But beyond the easy-to-see conversation points for both of these teams, in terms of Xs and Os, this is just a brutal matchup for Pittsburgh. The team is just not built in a way that enables it to succeed against a team like the Chiefs. Just a few weeks ago, we saw it live when the Chiefs won 36-10 at Arrowhead. Sunday night will be highlighted by fans full of energy — and while Pittsburgh might want to play the “nobody believes in us” card, I don’t think it will amount to much. Ben Roethlisberger goes out with a tough loss in Kansas City. Chiefs 30, Steelers 16

The Chiefs have said all the right things when it comes to their blowout of the Steelers three short weeks ago — and that is (paraphrasing here) that they have flushed it and moved on. T.J. Watt is an absolute game wrecker — but the last time around, he was a shell of himself, battling through severe pain due to an injury to his ribs. The Chiefs will need to find a way to neutralize the now-healthy Watt so that their offense can operate. Ben Roethlisberger is now unofficially playing for his career. I think that motivates the Pittsburgh offense to have a better game — but not by all that much. The only way the Steelers have a chance is if they can hold Kansas City under 20 points — and even with Watt, I don’t think they can. Watt or not, this is still Patrick Mahomes vs. Roethlisberger. Ethan Willinger (@ecwillinger)

I expect the Steelers to perform better than they did in the first matchup between these teams. In the rematch, Mike Tomlin will throw everything he has at the Chiefs — and Ben Roethlisberger won’t go out without a fight. With a healthy T.J. Watt in the lineup, the Pittsburgh defense will be ready to capitalize on any Kansas City mistakes. But if the Chiefs are primed to make a run in the playoffs, they will roll over an overmatched Steelers squad. The offense will need to prioritize patience — and the defense simply can’t beat itself. Assuming Najee Harris can go, Pittsburgh’s priorities on offense will be apparent: establish the run and test the aggressiveness of Kansas City’s secondary. The Chiefs will need to sell out to stop the run and refrain from committing costly penalties in the passing game. It sounds simple enough — but for two consecutive weeks, they have struggled to force opposing offenses out of their comfort zones. Feeding off the energy at Arrowhead, I expect Kansas City’s defense to take a step in the right direction. The Steelers will hang in there — but start to finish, the Chiefs will be in control.
