As Alex continues to rev up his numbers on the year….over 4,000 yards passing, highest QB rate in the NFL (104.7–higher than Tom Brady), highest number of 40+ yard completions, fewest number of INTs of any of the highest rated QBS, 4,397 yards passing and rushing etc etc etc…..We all know the Chiefs plan to trade or release Alex after this season but inevitably that brings up some questions….
1) What if Alex wins us a Super Bowl? Can you really trade or cut him? Keep in mind that Reid has never won a Super Bowl, so would Reid really get rid of a QB who got him (Reid) his first Super Bowl win and suddenly made him (Reid) a contender for the NFL HOF?
2) What if Alex takes us to a Super Bowl but we lose a nail-biter where Alex plays really well? Can you really trade or cut him?
3) What if Alex takes us to the AFC Championship but we lose a nail-biter and Alex plays really well? Can you really trade or cut him?
4) What if at the end of the year Alex offers to renegotiate his contract in a way that helps the Chief a lot with their cap problem? Can you really trade or cut him? I know that sounds far-fetched, but Alex will be 34 and maybe he’d like to finish out his career with a good team instead of getting traded or cut and risk winding up on a crap team?
5) What if we get no decent trade offers for Alex because every team figures that if we get no offers we are simply going to cut him? Do we really just cut him? Think about this….If we cut him before June 1 we create $3.6 million in dead money. And that doesn’t change much if we cut him after June 1. Or do we hold onto him on the theory that somewhere between June 1 and the first few games of the season some team somewhere is going to get REALLY DESPERATE for a good QB coming off the best season of his career? If we did that and traded him before the trade deadline we’d suddenly find ourselves with a HUGE cap space windfall that could be used to sign some needed vets for the last half of the season or carried over into the next year.
Yes….I really like Alex Smith but I am trying to think about these question logically rather than emotionally. And the more I think about it the more situations I see where Alex might not be cut or traded right away or at all.
So what do you guys think? Am I sniffing out some scenarios that are different than what we expect or am I barking up the wrong tree?
