some what dated. but the USS Iowa is finally underway and will soon head for its new home in LA. with a stop in Richmond for some needed repairs.
years a go the state of Iowa opened its purse for contributions to have her moved. and I made mine. took long enough but finally got my money’s worth. I am so happy to see her out of pack rat fleet and away from the chopping block. a piece of American history has been saved. I think she’s been there since 1960

i remember a vet telling me w/he was on a battleship and it fired a full volley, the recoil “litteraly” pushed the ship sideways back thru the water. during a bombardment some ships would need to bring the ship back into range after hours of shelling. can you imagine the fire power they had to move forty five thousand tons sideways thru water? think of the resistance of water on your hand when you push it thru water. congratulations on saving an important part of history, we should never forget what they and the brave men aboard did for us.

its takes very little to push any ship big or small. you can push one away from a peer with one leg. that’s how buoyant they are.that is true,but try this experiment; take a 4×8 sheet of plywood, submerge it lenghtwise in a swimming pool and with one on each end try to push it quickly thru the water. you will find it quite difficult yet one of you can slowly push one end with almost no effort.

I think it was back in the 70’s. the city council in Independence, Mo put together a proposal to bring the Missouri there. Independence being the home of the late prez Harry Truman. it called to bring her up the Mississippi, then a left turn at the Missouri river. all the way across state. but she was just wide enough for passage. problem. because of her massive weight she no doubt would get stuck in the muddy bottom. solution. remove every thing above the main deck. then rail, truck and fly the parts in for reassembly.
